A thorough oral examination is the basis for quality dental care and requires, at a minimum, adequate sedation, a bright light, full mouth speculum, and a mirror. If we can’t see a problem we can’t diagnose it, if we don’t diagnose it, we can’t treat it. Here are photos of an “exam” without the required elements and one with them.
If you went to your dentist and he didn’t ask you to open your mouth, use a light, or a mirror, and just rubbed a finger on your teeth, what would you think of the quality of that exam? Why would you do that to your horse?
